What is The Way™, if any, to deal with backscatter?
Take a look at milter-null from SirWumpus / Anthony Howe / SnertSoft:

milter-null works by adding a header to outgoing messages and then
subsequently looking for that header in inbound well-formed DSNs. If
the inbound DSN doesn't have the header, it's considered bogus and
treated as such; rejected or maybe quarantined based on configuration.
