Yes, Will is right: When you hover over a link you'll see the actual URL.
Plus the status bar is used for showing the trial period and if you are
connected by https or http.
I tried the new Google Chrome browser on Windows and they handle the URL in
a very good way: No status bar is shown, but the URL is displayed over the
last line of your browser content as a little popup. This would be an
elegant solution, as it conserves space and stills shows this important
piece of information.

However, I can't change anything for 2.0 release as many translations are
already available.
