Hi Alan, If you take the very latest build (956), installation should be possible from within Mailplane -- no external browser is required. Mailplane will open a separate window and after you agree to the Gears terms it'll download the package (Window->Download Window).
If nothing helps, switching to Safari for the installation would be an alternative.
