Hi Judi,
There should be no difference between Safari and Mailplane, of course.
Maybe resetting your Gmail session do the trick:

• Do a Mailplane->Empty Cache

• Stop Mailplane

• Open Finder

• Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Mailplane

• Delete all *.cookies files (*do not delete Accounts.xml)*

• Start Mailplane


Please also double check the Gadget settings inside Mailplane.
