Hi Mark, Yes, you can. There's a new setting Preferences/Advanced/Load Google Gears for "Gmail Offline".
However, the problem we encountered was a general Gmail problem. I experienced it in different browsers. I don't know how Google is managing it, but each browser has its own Gmail session - this could make a difference.
