Hi Jokke,
I just retried it: Both Safari and Mailplane crash after clicking "Create
Event" menu item. Unfortunately, this is a Gmail/WebKit problem only Google
can fix. Here's is the Gmail known issues page in case you like to report
the bug: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs

As an alternative consider the Google Calendar gadget:

Best,
