The default mail app can be changed in Mailplane > Preferences >
Advanced.Unfortunately,
this will only work for mailto: links and "simple" mail compositions.
Unfortunately, sending attachments isn't standardized under Mac OS - this is
why the Mailplane iPhoto plugin exist.
I checked the Google Group and found these useful instructions:

tell application "Microsoft **Word**" to set doc to full name of active
document
tell application "Mailplane"
open doc
end tell
If you save that in a **script** (open **script** editor, paste in that
code,
and then save it as a **script**), then put that **script** into the "**Word

**Script** Menu Items" folder in home:Documents:Microsoft User Data
it all just works! Mailplane opens a new mail window, with the doc
attached...
Now, I don't know how to put this in the right place for **Word** to see
it as an option for the "send to" menu item... but it does function.*
