I have also had this problem. It happens almost exclusively when the browser isn't yet open. (For my it happens with Opera, my default browser). If Opera is open, it will create a new tab with the link. If Opera isn't yet open, it will open Opera and then open it as a link in the main window. It's a really irritating, and very consistent, bug for me. (Mailplane 2.1)
