HTML 5 instead of Google Gears is good news for Mailplane and Mac users.
WebKit, the browser engine used by Mailplane (and Safari + many other Mac
apps), already implements the HTML 5 standard. There is no need to install
any browser extensions to get offline storage, for instance.
With HTML 5 Mailplane can become a 64bit Mac application and still provide
Offline storage.

However, we have to wait for Gmail to move to HTML 5. Currently, "Offline
Gmail" still requires Google Gears. As far as I know, Google has not
announced any date or has mentioned which product will use HTML 5. BTW:
Gmail on iPhone already uses HTML 5...

While we wait for the HTML 5 transitions, we can still use Offline Gmail by
using Google Gears. Keep in mind that Google Gears isn't officially
supported for Snow Leopard, though.
