The latest preview (http://mailplaneapp.com/download/preview/) now opens the
"sign-in" inside Mailplane. No need to ⌘-Click the link anymore.

However, you'll still get the 404. This is a Gmail/Docs issue as it happens
in Safari too. To get back to your inbox (and access Google Docs) please use
View > Refresh Page.
