Gmail uses Flash for some features, but it has fallback implementations when Flash isn't present.
To my knowledge, these are the "Flash" features: *The attachment uploader w/ the progress bar.* **You can disable it in* Gmail > Settings > General*. Just change "*Advanced attachment feature" to "Basic attachment feature*") *Chat sound notifications* I suppose this one is crashing Mailplane/Safari/Firefox as it might connect to Gmail. You can disable in *Gmail > Settings > Chat > Sounds * *Voice and video chat:* If you have enabled the Google Talk plugin it'll load a flash movie in your *Gmail > Settings > Chat > Voice and video > Verify your settings* chat and when you initiate a chat. To disable: Uninstall the Google Talk plugin *Google Talk Window:* It's based on the Google Talk Gadget, which is implemented in Flash.
