I tried to reproduce the problem: 133 MB (private memory) and 1-2% when in background. So 1GB really too much!
Do you use Offline Gmail w/ Google Gears? To make sure we talk about the same values: - Open Activity Monitor - Select *View > Columns *from the menu and check "Real Private Memory" - Search for Mailplane - How much memory does the "Private Mem" column show? Could you measure the memory after restarting Mailplane, too? Thanks.
