Here's a simpler workaround: Go to *Gmail > Settings *and set the attachments to *Basic attachment handling*. As a result the text cursor (search, to, from, cc bcc) should blink again.
The problem seems to be caused by a combination Safari 5.0.1 WebKit/Flash 10.1 and Gmail as it can be duplicated in Safari.
