It's probably my biggest annoyance with the OS. Not that this is a Mac-only problem. Anyone who deals with "business" apps in Windows knows that it can be inconvenient or even impossible to do certain things without MS Outlook, because full MAPI support is unavailable to third-party clients (and even to MS's own consumer apps). You either give in to the inevitable or end up maintaining two email programs.
In both cases it comes down to neglect, but I tend to think Microsoft is more in the willful neglect category. Here's hoping for some new APIs in 10.7.
