Mailplane uses WebKit (a Framework part of OSX). Safari and Mailplane use both same WebKit framework, though Mailplane currently bundles a different version to solve a serious Flash/WebKit problem.
Chrome is also based on WebKit but is integrated in the browser and not provided as a framework. But to my knowledge cannot be easily integrated into a OSX application.
