I just tried the feature and it worked. Here's what tried:

   - Open a conversation to see it in detail view
   - Press ⌘/ (Mail > Archive menu item)

The Gmail archive button isn't changed, only the ⌘/ menu item works
differently.
If you prefer the Gmail keyboard shortcuts, you can use [ or ] to archive
and open the next newer/older conversation.
Press ? to get a list of all keyboard shortcuts.
