Ruben found the solution. Google Labs now offers a feature which causes the Gmail "Refresh" link to trigger the retrieval of fresh POP mail. Works like a charm.
Look for "Refresh POP accounts" under Gmail > Settings > Labs. Thanks, Ruben!
