I recently bought a new MBP with integrated and discrete GPUs. From looking at the output of gfxCardStatus, it appears that Mailplane forces the GPU to use the relatively high-power usage discrete one, which decreases battery life. I suspect this is because of Flash within GMail, but I'm not 100% sure.
