Additional information. I have finally managed to delete the account in Mailplane - as I have stated the delete functionality was greyed out. I had to change the display name of the account then it let me delete it. I then added my second gmail account again - added the correct login and password and it is still loading my first gmail account - regardless of which account I click on.
