This is now happening for me as well — neither the preview build nor the labs "escape hatch" have solved the problem. I'm using Gmail in Chrome for now, until this is fixed.
If it helps, I'm running 10.7.1 on an i7 MacBook Air. I can only think of one significant change to my setup recently: my Google Apps accounts seem to have "multiple sign in" enabled now (which, as an aside, is very buggy). So I suspect this could be some kind of authentication/authorization issue.
