No, the iPhone is doing no additional steps. It's something to do with the formatting. I think it is actually base64 into an img tag in the html. I will look more closely the next time I get a chance to perform some tests. I can reproduce it easily.
Are you saying that MailPlane makes no mods to the email when an inline image is put in place? The generated source of the email is 100% gmail generated?
