Just to add another data point for people seeing this sort of behaviour. I 
was just experiencing exactly the same symptoms as those described above: 
resetting Mailplane 3 was doing nothing, and even selecting the "suppport & 
feedback" link didn't do anything, nor did "check for updates". I tried 
turning wireless of and on, and logging out, etc etc. Nothing changed the 
behaviour, even though gmail was happily loading inside of Firefox.

Finally twigged that I'd plugged in the ethernet cable yesterday afternoon 
(to get a stable hostname in order to run a script on another machine... 
irrelevant details suppressed!). So I think the problem is that Mailplane 3 
was grumpy about having two active network interfaces. All other 
applications were behaving fine. Maybe this points to a possible 
problem(?). Anyway, disconnecting the ethernet cable instantly brought 
everything back to life.
