Here is a temporary workaround. In a chat window and/or from compose in the main window, right click in the text input area and uncheck "Correct Spelling Automatically" (see red box in example image below). You will still get the red underline for misspelled words, just not the suggestion popup that causes the loss of focus issue.
An actual workaround that solves the issue while keeping the spelling suggestions would be very nice.
