Thanks Jessica, I had selected that. I think the issue was caused by an extension <https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/send-from-gmail-by-google/pgphcomnlaojlmmcjmiddhdapjpbgeoc> I had activated in Chrome. Once I deactivated the extension, mailto links opened in Mailplane.
