TjL, I might have a suggestion for you (see below).
I also always have multiple (three in my case) accounts open in Mailplane in separate tabs, and I find it easiest to switch between them just by clicking on appropriate tab in the tab bar. I've assigned a different background color to each account to make it really easy to see which account I'm working with at any particular time. In my case, if I want to start up in a particular account, I can just click on that tab before quitting, but I do have to remember. I'm not sure how externally programmable Mailplane is via Automator, but if it is, then you could create an Automator script to start Mailplane and switch you to the proper account.
