Role Description Project Managers (PMs) are responsible for the overall
direction, management, communication, coordination of status reports,
stability of project oriented work efforts and success of their projects
across the IT and Business organization. PMs utilize project management
processes and methodologies to ensure projects are delivered on time, within
budget, adhere to high quality standards and meet customer expectations.
They create scope documents based on approved charters and project plans
(work breakdown structures.) They track key milestones and adjust project
plans, budget requests and/or resources to meet the needs of customers.
Typical Accountabilities Utilize Project Management Methodology and Product
Development Methodology to …
ü Project Initiation Researches, analyzes, plans, documents, verifies, and
prepares data for scope document. Determines projected costs, deliverables,
timelines, feasibility, etc. Incorporates details into project documents for
customers and technical team to review and determine if the proposed project
is viable.
ü Planning If project is approved, develop, lead and oversee detailed
project timelines, deliverables, resources, tasks, dependencies, cost
estimates, effort required, etc., based upon the scope document. Ensures
this data is entered into a project plan (a.k.a. WBS). Identify and
coordinate with supporting organization to make risk assessments, determine
dependencies, while gathering feedback from appropriate areas. Often
facilitates development of conceptual design and/or technical architecture.
Ensure project plans are developed, resources assigned as appropriate based
on project size, scope and complexity while looking for integration points
with like products and like timing. May negotiate with functional management
to get resources.
ü Project Execution Accountable for managing and monitoring performance
including providing guidance to the management and core team. Responsible
for:· Escalating· Reporting · Communicating· Integration (ensuring various
elements of the project are properly coordinated)· Boundary Management
(working relationships within and outside team to accomplish goals)· Scope
Management (aligning project tasks and team accountabilities within the
boundaries of the agreed to scope document). Tracks events, tasks,
dependencies, etc. in the project plan. Identifies tasks that are ahead / on
/ behind schedule. Identifies discrepancies in budgeted versus actual costs.
Identifies items / issues that jeopardize the cost, quality or timeliness of
project deliverables.
Typical Accountabilities(continued) ü Control Reports status of project
(written, verbal, formal and informal presentations) to customers, project
team, supervisor, Project Offices, and other key staff. Communicates which
deliverables are ahead / on / behind schedule. Advises customers and staff
on strategies for dealing with barriers and changes to project plan.
Identifies, negotiates, communicates and manages project changes in any of
the following PMM knowledge areas:· Risk Management/Contingency Management ·
Time· Scope· Quality· Human Resources· Budget/Financial/Cost Management –
Approval and validation of project phase funding· Procurement·
Communication· Dependency Management · Impact Analysis related to the
Change· Certifies Acceptance of Deliverables - Works with customers,
Integrators and other IT/CD staff to obtain signoff and acceptance of
deliverables. Documents approvals (date, time, signatures, etc.) to close
out milestone or phase of project.
ü Closure Oversee product documentation and archiving by preparing package
of archived project items (e.g., charter, scope document, WBS, cost reports,
PMM and PDM deliverables, training and Help Desk documents, problem
management documents, etc.). Delivers copy of package (i.e., project
closure, vendor performance survey, executive summary and lessons learned)
to appropriate parties, as required (e.g., IT/CD PMO). Secures a complete,
up-to-date copy for own department files. Adheres to the Project Management
standards for project closure.
