I say the assertion is false.  It was certainly true when gcc was v2,
possibly true for v3 but having just done some quick tests with gcc4
I can't see much speed difference now.  Interestingly gcc gives
smaller binaries for the same speed and degree/type of optimisation.

I tested Sun C 5.8 (SunStudio 11).  5.9 (SunStudio 12) beats 5.8 so
maybe it beats gcc4 but for most compiles we stick to the Solaris 8
compatible 5.8 as I did.

I need to test all of generic, vis2 and v9 before being able to say
if one compiler has the edge on Sparc but for general use don't worry.

Sun cc has been winning the all-out speed contest as it was the only
way to take advantage of the AMD64 architecture.  I'll try the new
gcc4 on AMD64 when I have a moment (several hours, starting with
download).
