We could have a postinstall script which would detect and set the
architecture, but isn't it what isaexec does anyway?

Yes, but on every invocation. You can execute the postinstall selecting 32/64 bit with isaexec for optimal selection, but the selection should
be static and not be changed between invocations of the database.

Can I ask a naïve "why"?

Machine's architecture may change overnight? isaexec might become
broken? I don't have any other ideas.

You can boot a Solaris 8 and 9 Sparc in 32 or 64 bit. Yes, this is
an artifical example. However, I have a very bad feeling selecting
this at runtime. I just don't like the idea of copying an
installation from one machine to another and it then doesn't work
but I may be too picky here...

Best regards
