actually, I for one, was not questioning "why" at all :-)
I was asking what kind of mods to wxwidgets will be required.

The problem is not wxwidgets, the problem is that kicad needs to be
compiled with gcc as it has many many gcc-isms and upstream supports
gcc only and rejects fixes towards more compatibility, so patching
is pretty fruitless. And as c++-mangling is different between gcc
and Sun Studio you need to have all libs needed by kicad also as
gcc-versions. This includes wxwidgets here.
