The import of the unversioned pkgconfig-file seems to have happened some time
ago.
Probably some configure-scripts still contain the search for libpng.pc only?
it will provide a symlink if I did it right, I can't upload it though,
for the problem you were looking at, Dago. No guarantee it will solve
anything, but at least it will be consistent.
