The CNU 2-on-2 Regatta

 (Final Report)

April 22nd & 23rd – The CNU Sailing Center

For our second 2-on-2 event of the Spring, we had a mixed bag as to the weather. Saturday was overcast with good wind in the morning. Fortunately, we got five of the seven sets of races we needed for a complete round robin. After lunch we got just one set in before the rumble of thunder and lightning flashes sent the fleet in, just in time to miss the 2 inches of rain that fell on the Menchville area.

On Sunday we hoped to get the last two sets completed along with a race between Maryland and Virginia that had to be resailed due to a rigging failure (the mast fell down). With a failing breeze, the last pairing of the seventh set took better than 45 minutes. When the James River turned to glass, the fleet spent a half an hour at play and, with no sign of wind, we towed the fleet in. Maryland and Virginia waited a little longer, hoping to get the make-up race, but gave up and let the scores stand.

This shortened event created another problem – we had an unbreakable three way tie between CNU-2, Navy and Hampton. Navy beat Hampton, Hampton beat CNU-2 and CNU-2 beat Navy for the only losses the teams experienced. Since this wasn’t a qualifier for anything, we let the three way tie for first stand.

When we had a late drop by Cornell, we had hoped that Georgetown would be able to send a team down. But on Thursday, Georgetown let us know they couldn’t get a van and it became necessary to add another team, CNU-2. Because the regatta literature had already been printed, this team was known throughout the event as the “Not Really Georgetown” team. The regatta may not have produced the racing we had hoped for, but a lot of sailors had an awful lot of fun.
