The Leroy Grant Regatta
Christopher Newport University – April 29 & 30

While the most of the CNU team was sailing in the America Trophy Regatta at
Old Dominion, the rest of the team and Jim White were hosting the Leroy Grant
Regatta at the CNU Sailing Center. The Grant is sort of the “runner up bowl”
to the America and is open to all the 25 teams that failed to qualify for
the America. The event has been held at Cornell for the past few years and we,
at CNU, felt it was appropriate to host it in the south this year.
Just as the winds were high at ODU, so were they at CNU and this made for
some exciting sailing and quite a few capsizes for the five teams attending.
CNU
put a team on the water for Saturday to facilitate the rotations, but the
team avoided any interference with the contending teams and neither was it
scored.
The event was sponsored by Allan Witt of Witt, Mare & Company. This
sponsorship provided lunch for all competitors on Saturday and the T shirts
given to
all the competitors. The sponsorships we have had for several of our events
this year do more than simply “sweeten the event” for competitors. By having
lunch ready when the teams come ashore, time is saved and the competition
goes much more smoothly. Further, these extra favors make our event very
popular
with the other teams in MAISA. So, and extra special thanks go to Witt, Mare
& Company, Old Dominion Metals, and Bill Saunders of Wachovia Securities of
Hampton for their support of Christopher Newport Regattas. We and all of our
guest teams sincerely appreciate their support.
Comments on the racing: As you can see, particularly from the A Division
scores, these teams were well matched and this made for some very exciting
racing. There were quite a few capsizes and one competitor collected five
staples
in his head after contact with a rudder during a capsize! But he was Army and
tough!
