Hi, oops, we have a terminology issue here. This will become very important particularly if you are making the sometimes incredibly difficult transition to computer based music. Trust me, I know from personal experience. When I first started playing there weren’t any accessible music software and by accessible I don’t mean disability wise I mean accessible to the general public. yes I know that dates me terribly. Asio isn’t a sound card. Asio stands for Audio stream input output and is a driver protocol, think of it as a language, that means it’s a method of communication used by certain drivers to communicate between say your keyboard and certain sound cards.
A sound card is usually a board inside your computer but can now be a usb device that you plug in but it’s a piece of hardware. A driver is a piece of software which tells the sound card how to communicate with your computer and, sometimes your music keyboard. in this case ASIO is a protocol that drivers use. Some sound cards support it and some don’t. So to answer yur questions, there are no free sound cards, that’s for sure. Whether we can get asio to work on your system depends on what you’re trying to make it do. So we would need to know, what sound card you have and what keyboard or music synthesizer you’re using. Also, what if any adaptive technology you’re using might help. then one of us should be able to help, <smile>. hth. Cheers! I can’t get Asio to work no matter what I do, and direct sound is latent. Is there any other free or paid soundcard I should get? Seth
