Hi Scott,
No, QWS doesn't have any special crash log, but if you enable Windows crash
logging, that should work.
You could also try and isolate what's causing the problem:
For example, if you press record, but don't play anything, does it work or
crash?
For example, if you press Play, does it crash?
For example, if you play your keyboard (without recording), does it crash?
For example, if you play lots of notes together, or just single notes, does
it crash?
Personally, I've not had reports of problems like this before, so it will be
interesting to know why ... though I don't promise I'll be able to fix it.
Hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

Hi James. Thanks for the info.
Does QWS have a log it generates somewhere when it crashes? I looked in the
program folder as well as my user folder under appdata and didn't find such
a file and I'm trying to figure out what's making the program crash after I
record anywhere betewwn 8 to 12 bars.
Maybe I need to reinstall?

Hi Scott,
Good to hear from you again.
Yes, it's quite easy to change the metronome: all you do is go into the
Options -> Metronome dialog.
Tab around here and you'll find controls to set the key and velocity for the
First beat and Other beats.
As standard, it uses the GM numbers for the metronome clicks, but not every
synth uses these.
So, in the tutorials, I was just using the standard cross stick sound
(bottom C#) between the bass drum and the snare.
Now, here's a little thing: in many of the QWS dialogs where MIDI values are
required, you can just play your keyboard and QWS will fill the values in
from what you play. This is true in the Metronome dialog: So, for example,
Tab to the First beat and play a note on your keyboard and the key and
velocity will be filled in.
Then Tab to the Other beat controls and play the note you want for that (it
can be the same note if you want) and QWS will fill that in, too.
And of course, you can edit it either playing the MIDI keyboard, or by
adjusting the values directly on your computer.
Hope this helps.
Let me know how you get on.
God bless,
James.

Hi james.
Thank you for the explanation and I did have another question about the
metronome. How did you get it to sound the way you did in the tutorial?
At present, it's using drum samples from the roland and I'd like to change
it to a standard click track like you were using in your tutorial if that's
possible.
Thanks for any ideas on how I might be able to do this.
Scott

Hi Scott,
Glad you got the metronome sorted out. To assure you, when you have the
metronome switched on, it is not recorded into your track.
No, I haven't greatly studied the FA list - I don't have one. Currently, the
instrument list is a standard Windows dropdown list control, so it only
searches on the first letter that you type. This is something perhaps to
look into at some point.
So, at present, if you press the letter S twice, the list will jump to the
second item beginning with S.
Remember also that you can operate any combination of the instrument list
and the MIDI program and bank numbers. So another way to navigate is to
memorise a few important bank numbers. Then, if you enter a particular bank,
the instrument list will synchronise to that instrument. Then, when you type
a letter in the list, it will jump to the next instrument from that bank
onwards.
I appreciate this is still not ideal, but I hope it is of some help.
With best regards,
James.

Hi James. The song001.mid is now coming out of the synth like it's supposed
to so I think I have that part of things squared away.
Now, in the metronome, it's showing that the first and other beats port for
this is also the synth so does that mean that the metronome will be a part
of the recordings? There doesn't seem to be an alternative output device
listed for routing the metronome through.
I'm also curious about if there's a way to search for instruments or
instrument types. As you've probably seen with the roland fa series, the
list has over 5000 instruments so searching for sounds can take quite a
while.

Hi,
Can I just check with you again: when you play a MIDI file, does it come out
of your computer speakers, or out of your synth?
In QWS, do the tracks say for the Port, Microsoft GS Wavetable?
Have you also set the default port in the QWS Options to use your Roland FA?
You can find this option in Options -> General.
Hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

I see the properties of the roland fa and there's general, driver and
details but nothing that I can find about latency settings. I'm looking in
device manager so am I in the wrong place?

Check your MIDI settings for your synth drivers. There may be a latency
setting, and you want to move that down as much as possible.
Most hardware synths have no discernible latency, which indicates it's
happening between the output to the MIDI interface from QWS or in the
interface itself. And since QWS doesn't do this for anything else I'm
suspecting the MIDI interface.

I'm using the roland. I haven't used software synths yet, though it's
something I'd like to look into at some point.

When you have blatancy issues, are-you using the Roland's tone
generator or a software synthesizer to play your music?

Hi Seth.
Thanks for the help.
My keyboard showed up as a port and I checked the box that says use
this as a preferred device. I then went to instruments and selected
the synth from there, inserted some tracks, choosing a different
instrument for each track and channel and that part of it finally
seemed to work.
I've got another problem that I'm not sure how to resolve and that is
a significant delay between when I press a key and when I hear that
note in QWS.
Someone has suggested using ASIO if it was available but it's a USB
port my keyboard is going into which means the synth itself is acting
as the sound card for QWS and I don't believe there's ASIO for USB
ports specifically, though I may be wrong about this.
I looked around in some of the other options and wasn't sure what
else to change to resolve the latency issue.
Also, is it best to create a blank .mid file that has the template
for your projects like instrument selections and ports because it
seems that this information isn't saved by default in QWS itself.

Sorry, I meant checkbox. If your keyboard doesn't show up in the
ports dialogue, then you probably need to install the driver that came
with your keyboard.
Hope this helps.

The instrument dialogue is for choosing instrument lists, not ports.
Make sure your keyboard is plugged in before u start QWS.
Then see if your keyboard shows up in the ports dialogue in the
options menu. If it does, make sure to check the use this port chrckbox.

Hi there.
I spent a good part of yesterday listening through most of the
audio tutorial for QWS but I'm having a problem and I was hoping I
could get some help with it.
I've got the roland fa08 and in the instruments dialog, I chose the
roland fa08 consolidated list and the roland fa08 for the port.
now, when I go to track and insert, it shows me only the Microsoft
gm option but it should be showing me what I selected in the
instrument dialog? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help.
I'm using windows 7-32 bit.
