http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/06/26/how-moms-feel-about-social-media/?mod=rss_WSJBlog * June 26, 2009, 8:03 AM ET How Moms Feel About Social Media Mothers have dramatically increased their use of social-networking tools in the past three years, according to a new survey of 25,000 women conducted by parenting site BabyCenter. About 63% of moms used Facebook, Twitter and blogs this year, a whopping increase from 11% in 2006. The survey also found that the kinds of media moms spent time using changed after giving birth. Post-birth, nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they used the Internet more, while their use of other media formats decreased. For example, 44% said they regularly gave TV the sole focus of their attention prior to giving birth, which plummeted to 7% after giving birth. Moms are also more than twice as likely to use “mother-centric” sites like BabyCenter and CafeMom than they were to use mainstream sites like Facebook. About 68% used these parenting-themed sites, compared with a third who use non-themed sites, according to the study. Social networking was often to connect with fellow moms, said Tina Sharkey, chairman of BabyCenter, with 68% connecting with another parent online at least once a week. “Participating in social media as a mom is not the same as hooking up with your camp friends,” she said. “It’s about finding the moms who can really support your journey.” That means other mothers going through the same things, she said. She showed a few examples of responses to the question of how to tell your child the truth about the tooth fairy. On Facebook, the responses were more sarcastic, such as, “What do you mean? There is no tooth fairy? Wait a minute, I was never told about this.” Responses on the BabyCenter message boards, however, tended to be based on real-life examples, such as, “As they get older and go to school, they figure it out on their own” and “My husband thinks it’s time to tell them the truth.” Moms are also big users of smart phones (36% own one), PDAs (16%) and cellphones in general. Ninety-one percent said they’d never leave the house without one, and more than half (52%) use them to communicate with their kids’ school. The survey also found them using technology to keep track of family memories — 93% own digital cameras, 84% edit and manage snapshots online, and 45% make home videos. And 15% blog about their family lives. “She is armed with technology,” Ms. Sharkey said. ------------------------------------ ========================================== MILIS MAJELIS MUDA MUSLIM BANDUNG (M3B) Milis tempat cerita, curhat atau ngegosip mengenai masalah anak muda dan Islam.
