Well, no clues were forthcoming, but I have solved it on my own and the
answer isn't pretty, for me.
Most important, I have won (Tk build run finishes at last).
The answer: I had (~2 weeks ago) tried to be careful and thorough in
that I manually uninstalled (removed files) *everything* in
/usr/lib/perl/5.6.1/ExtUtils/ before upgrading (installing
ExtUtils::MakeMaker-6.03).
Of course what this means is that i removed 5 files along with the
files replaced by MakeMaker, that are not part of the MakeMaker
package: xsubpp, typemap, inst, Miniperl.pm, and one other.
Sorry for the alarm, esp. Michael Schwern: mea culpa. Yet I think a
small addition to documentation for MakeMaker warning about this might
be very nice to supply, to wit: "ExtUtils::MakeMaker is not the only
source of files which (by default, core distro) populate the ExtUtils
subtree of your Perl installation; do not remove those other files".
Regards to All,
