MakeMaker choosing the C compiler used.

I am attempting to discern how makeMaker chooses the C compiler used. I
am having an issue where make maker is picking the wrong compiler on a
Solaris 9 box. I have gcc 3.2.3 installed and no versions of cc. However
make maker is picking cc most of the time. Can you point me at some info
regarding the methodology by which the C compiler is chosen
