Destroying fair use while attempting to mitigate piracy is unacceptable,
both as a legal and practical matter. This is particularly egregious on
Sony's part -- it would be criminal for the US government to allow Sony
to use the deliberate introduction of data errors onto media in order to
induce consumers to purchase (from Sony, et al) replacements for over a
billion dollars of perfectly working, legally manufactured hardware. It
violates every tenet of fraud protection in commerce.
