Subject: Quote of the day for February 17, 2003

"Factory worker Constantin Simion, 52, from Campineanca in Romania,
who spent most of his life under Ceausescu's dictorship, has asked for
asylum in Iraq. "If Iraq says no, I'll try my luck with Libya or Cuba,
anything that is a totalitarian regime," he said. "I'm sick of
 democracy."

 - from the _Fortean Times_

Although some members of the QOTD Discussion Group Committee felt
today's entry was "simply too rich in ironies to require elaboration"
or that extended discussion would be "like shooting ducks in a
barrel," long deliberation about possible categories of debate
winnowed the matter down to two suggested topics:

 1) After winning a war in which approximately 80,000 civilian deaths
are expected the US government currently proposes to put Iraq
under a "protectorate." - Will this make Iraq MORE or LESS
attractive to Romanian factory worker Constantin Simion?

 2) It has been said that being Romanian is "not a nationality, but a
    profession." Discuss.
