(AP) - On a bitter cold night with wind chills of -37 to -43 degrees C, the University of Maine hoped to create enough heat Friday night to reclaim the world kissing record from Canada but fell short. The university set a record on Valentine's Day 1996 with 1,420 couples smooching at once but it was broken in 2000 when 1,588 couples locked lips in Sarnia, Ont. On Friday, 943 couples took part. Organizers blamed the low turnout on cold weather and Maine's loss in a hockey game earlier in the evening, when lots of students left the game before the kissing event began. ``Even by Northern New England standards, it's awfully cold and the temptation to stay inside can be overwhelming,'' said university spokesman Joe Carr. There was a windchill advisory and the temperature was well below freezing when the event started at 10 p.m. EST. ``Our concern was a snowstorm. Little did we know it's going to be the coldest night of year,'' said Sandra Caron, an organizer of the event, as well as a professor of family relations and human sexuality. At the Field House, there was music to set the mood and breath-freshening chewing gum to make sure no one suffered. All participants were to receive a numbered tag upon entering the Field House. Rules required a 10-second kiss to allow documentation for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. The rules changed a bit since 1996, when children were allowed to bolster the numbers of couples. Children were welcome to join in the group kiss but only those 16 or older were to be counted. Josh Luce, a freshman from Brewer, Me., said even though they fell short of setting a new record, the event was still fun and brought together the student community. Plus, he added, the kiss with his partner was ``definitely a 10.'' To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body "unsubscribe man-bytes-dog" (the subject is ignored).
