Head South For Winter Wahoo "When they make their initial run after first feeling the hook they can attain speeds of 60 miles per hour and will truly test an anglers equipment to the limit." By Eric Brictson There are many exciting gamefish to catch in the tropical blue waters around the world but when you are really after some true sportfishing excitement, there is one gamefish that should definitely be at the top of your list: the Wahoo! They are one of the true glamour gamefish, considered to be one of the fastest swimming species in the oceans. Pelagic and seasonally migratory, they usually travel alone or in small groups but occasionally will be found in larger schools. Wahoo are the largest members of the mackerel family. Other names for them are "Ono," what they are called in Hawaii, and "Sierra Golfina," what they are called in Mexico. The average weight range is between 20 and 70 pounds but the IGFA all tackle record stands at 158 pounds. Even larger fish have been landed commercially. When they make their initial run after first feeling the hook they can attain speeds of 60 miles per hour and will truly test an angler's equipment to the limit. Besides their incredible speed they have one of the sharpest sets of teeth around and are capable of slicing through large baits with ease, leaving a knife-like cut. Heavy monofiliment lines are like butter for them, which makes it a necessity to use wire leader material. Their teeth are not all that large, like that of a big snapper or a barracuda, but it is their sharpness and the way that they mesh that does the serious damage. These speedsters of the sea can be extremely elusive at times and then there will be times when the action can be fast and furious. They will scream line off a reel at speeds unequaled by other species and they are also very unpredictable. After stripping your reel of several hundred yards of line, the same fish can turn and come right at you just as fast. It takes very quick reflexes and maneuvering, along with a high speed retrieve reel to try and keep up with them. They are very good at creating a belly in your line and turning around while slicing through the line with their scissor like teeth. Wahoo at times will jump into the air and have been known to rocket out from the depths, reaching heights of thirty feet. Along with free jumping while chasing bait, they will often jump while striking both trolled lures or live bait. There are also numerous stories of them jumping right into boats while chasing bait or lures. Of course this can be extremely dangerous, and caution should always be taken in areas where wahoo are known to be. There have been many reported incidents of people sustaining very serious injuries due to being cut by the teeth of a wahoo. Wahoo have a tuna type tail but their body is more streamlined. They have a pointed mouth, dark blue coloring on their back with silver below, and dark bars which can flash blue when they are alive. One of the more prized gamefish, both as an excellent fighter and for its superb eating qualities, it has finely grained flesh with a sweet taste. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Millis ini terselengara berkat dukungan PT.
