Happy Fathers Day this Sunday to all you dads. Time may be short to get a
gift for Dad, and by the time you read this it may be too late for us to
ship you our special offer for an autographed copy of my fishing
encyclopedia, but you can always go to a major bookstore and pick up a copy.
Actually, a good gift would be some quality time going fishing.............
IN THIS ISSUE:
1. More New Q&As
2. All About Fishing Rods
3. What You Should Know About Surface Lures
=========================================================================
MORE NEW Q&As
Admittedly, Im struggling to answer the questions that come in, but in
between a bit of fishing and sleeping I managed to address a few. This week
weve added to our long archive of reader Q&As with some tidbits about
helping kids to catch pond fish, identifying yet another mystery fish, what
sonar features are important for shallow water fishing, painting/lacquering
lures, the line strength to use for a particular spincasting outfit, salmon
eating/striking behavior, the measurements of the all tackle world record
bass, white bass spawning, walleye trolling speed, and line strength for
spinning outfits and panfish. Check out these items, and four-score more.

ALL ABOUT FISHING RODS
Someone recently told me that he looked at the encyclopedia information
about fishing reels on kenschultz.com and thought there was so much there
he could build his own reel! A reporter commented that we have so much info
in the encyclopedia portion of the site that if something isnt here, you
dont need to know it! Okay, thats a little bit overboard, but we like it.
So, you want to know about rods something more than just, this ones for
walleye bottom bouncing, and this ones for flipping, and this ones for
downrigger trolling? Even if you think youre pretty rod-savvy you ought
to check out this comprehensive discussion of fishing rods, especially the
part about rod dynamics (how they do what they do), materials and
construction, features, and the commentary about rod aspects relative to
casting, detecting a strike or bite, setting the hook, and fighting/landing
the fish. An interesting fact is that some rod functions require opposite
properties for optimal performance, which obviously complicates rod design.
Heres where youll find the whole story:

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SURFACE LURES
Summer isnt even officially here yet, and Ive already been doing a bunch
of fishing with popping plugs in both freshwater and saltwater. I think
everybody who uses lures loves to catch fish on top, and with the water
warming up, theres a lot of surface fishing yet to be done. With that in
mind, check out my thoughts about when, where, and how to use poppers and
wobblers, floating/diving lures, propellered plugs, buzzbaits, stickbaits,
and specialty surface lures.
