QUICK AND EASY DEAD BAIT BALLYHOO CIRCLE HOOK RIG
Captain Arch Bracher of the "Pelican" is known as one of the top captains in the world when it comes to catching sailfish. During any given season in Mexico (Cancun), the crew of the "Pelican" can average over 600 sailfish releases. This past spring, captain Arch and mate Justin Ringer took a few minutes to show me how they rig their ballyhoo with circle hooks. Captain Arch said, "this is one of the quickest and easiest ways we have found, it is not only effective but rarely do you have a bait that doesn't swim correctly". Mate Justin also pointed out "it's important to push your monel through the dead center of the ballyhoo head. Make sure you also pull the hook down flush to the top of the head". While observing, I found this technique to look a little awkward at first, but soon realized as we dropped the riggers, the baits paddled with "dark backs" and only a couple were replaced due to a fouled hook the entire day. I would also like to note that captain Arch does not use circle hooks exclusively while fishing in Mexico. It just so happened the "Pelican" crew were preparing for an all circle hook tournament. Arch said he is using the circle hooks more and more but it still depends on what his charter clients prefer.
