This is probably the following issue: 7324: Sorting of issues list (filters) does not work after upgrade to MySQL 4.1.21 http://www.mantisbt.org/bugs/view.php?id=7324
This is a MySQL bug that is fixed in 4.1.22. I believe they also have a patch for it. If you own the server then upgrade to 4.1.22 or later. If you don't, then you can request it from your hosting company.
