There's a recent biography of Cicero by A.Everitt which seems to me both to provide important illustrations of the background to V, combined with a fair amount of general information about the Roman Republic, its history and life. This is a book which can, I think, claim both scholarly and popular credentials. However, AE calls C Rome's greatest politician, a title I think I would bestow on Augustus, for all that he had the blood of C and others (and that of the whole Republic, perhaps) on his hands. - Martin Hughes
