In the States, at least, many classical names were imposed on enslaved Africans (as with Caesar in Aphra Behn's Oroonoko). To great extent, this helps explain the occasional Virgil, Aeneas, and Marcellus in my classroom. Such usage may also explain some of the American cultural associations--both negative and agrarian. The name "Homer" may be a different case. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- To leave the Mantovano mailing list at any time, do NOT hit reply.
