Dear List I'm looking for information about the artists responsible for two different sets of engravings in a pair of mid-seventeenth-century editions of Virgil.
1: The first set appears in a French prose translation by Michel de Marolles, Abbe de Villeloin (Paris: Toussainct Quintet, 1649). The engravings are all signed by "F.C," but I haven't been able to find a full name for the artist. Can anyone come up with a name or tell me where I might dig for one? 2: The second set appears first in John Ogilby's 1654 translation of Virgil (the plates were later reprinted with alterations in Dryden's 1697 edition). Francis Cleyn was responsible for many of the images in the edition, and he worked with with a variety of engravers (W. Hollar, P. Lombart, W. Faithorne). A few of the engravings, however, are completely unsigned. (I am particularly interested in the final engraving to the 'Georgics,' which depicts bees streming from the bodies of dead bullocks, an empty temple, a rising sun.) Can anyone help with the attribution of this engraving?
