        I found what I wanted:  

        "Our classic, the classic of all Europe, is Virgil."

        From "What is a Classic?," Eliot's Presidential Address to the
        Virgil Society in 1944...

        I am a retired teacher of languages.  Taught Latin in an earlier
        incarnation, last time a quarter-century ago.  Trying to reuscitate
        my Latin now.   In the past quater-century I taught Spanish, 
        German, English and French in various parts of the world.
