My wife, working on Proust, needs to know when Galatea enters the classical story of Pygmalion and the statue of Venus, and whether this Galatea has anything to do with the nymph in the story of Polyphemus or the one in Theocritus and Vergil. I can find no classical source for Pygmalion and Galatea before Ovid and only a reference to Arnobius after him..
