Horsfall in his _Companion_ writes: 'That he was a native of Mantua is a deduction from the text', citing Brugnoli in Enciclopedia Virgiliana 5*. 578; 'The claims of Andes (VSD 2), 30 MP from Mantua might be embroideries on the ground of Buc. 1.34, 9.6, 64'; he cites Heinrich Naumann, _Das altsprachliche Unterricht_, 24.5 (1981), 11, and for the distance observes (n. 36): '30, rather than 3 is pretty clearly what 'Probus' wrote (L. Lehnus, _Scripta Philologa_ 3 (1982), 200f.) but the detail is anyway not even remotely reliable; Lehnus 197, after G. Jachmann, _Klio_ 35 (1942), 85f.'

Horsfall doesn't like believing things, but even if birth in Andes is no more than an inference from the lines cited that because the action takes place in a village some way from the town therefore Vergil was born there (and ancient biographers are certainly capable of such screwy thinking), the person who drew it must have known the area well enough to come up with the name. Perhaps you would like to tell us how far Andes really is from Mantua.

This is my first day of subscriber / first message.

I've been visiting Mantova- Piedole- Andes area two weeks ago, standing in Corte Virgiliana (very reccommendable place). Of course I am familiarize with the Conway-Rand controversy. But I don't know (and I'd like) if this discussion has had a continuation afterwards.

Andes as Vegil's birthplace is fully accepted today?

Thanks

Daniel Martin
